Smooth path to EU accession for Lithuanian Customs
In recent years, the European Union (EU) and its
member states have been investing in updated,
automated customs procedures to smooth trade across
internal and external borders. New members such as
Lithuania have faced particular challenges in
achieving integration with the EU customs union.
During the early years after Lithuanian independence,
Lithuanian Customs developed stand-alone
applications to manage specific aspects of its
operations. As trade volumes grew, however, the lack
of a centralised Customs Information System (CIS)
slowed down clearance and was seen by local
companies as an obstacle to international trade.
